I think that 8 years ago the ritual doesn't work because there were no representatives from both sides. Like Ibara and the first Miko, the Miko opened the door and the Oni enter it.

no, I think the ritual failed because the miko never actually did it, the ikemen (Ukon?) killed her before she actually performed it, that's why so many people died
